14th October 2007 - Bicentenary of Abolition of Slave Trade

On 29 August 1833 – the Act to abolish slavery was passed, with effect from 1834 and providing for up to six years' 'apprentice'

On 1st August 1838 – enslaved men, women and children in the British colonies became free

21st century – the legacies of the slave trade and slavery live on through racism, underdevelopment and contemporary forms of enslavement.

This year various organisations, institutions both private and public commemorated this day in different style.  London Borough of Waltham Forest marked this by planting a tree outside the town.  In attendance for the tree planting were Ghana High Commissioner, Nigeria High Commissioner, Sierra Leonean Diplomat, Jamaican High Commissioner and representatives from St Lucia.

25th October 2007 - BIBA AWARD 2007

I was delighted when asked by Waltham Forest Social Services Adoption and fostering section to do the presentation to the winner of the category that the borough sponsored (Social & Humanitarian).  The event was held at its usual venue, the Marriot Hotel, Grosvenor Square.  The winner was Donna Akuffor.  Donna was diagnosed with Lupus, an autoimmune disease for which there is currently no cure.  She is involved with various voluntary group projects where she covers a variety of roles, coordinator, newsletter editor and volunteer trainer for Arthritis Care.  She has recently appointed to the role of Information Service Manager for Arthritis Care SE England.
